The California DMV licenses or approves driving related schools in California. There are three types. |
Online Driver Education
Driver education is the textbook portion of learning to drive. Students learn the "rules of the road", traffic signs, speed limits, the California Vehicle Code and more.
Driver education must be completed before you can begin driver training.
There is no minimum age for driver education but most students take it while they are high school freshmen.
We recommend taking driver education through a home study course at Cal-Driver-Ed.
When you pass the course, they will send you a DMV form called a "Certificate of Completion of Driver Education."
|
Driver Training
Driver Training is the "behind the wheel" portion of learning to drive. Students spend a minimum of six hours with a DMV licensed driving instructor in a car equipped with dua brakes for safety.
Once you have completed driver ed, you will need to enroll in a driver training program. You will receive a DMV form called a Certificate of Enrollment in Driver Training."
There are hundreds of driving schools located throughout California. Check our driving school directory to find one near you.
You will need to take the Certificate of Enrollment and the driver ed certificate to your local dmv office to obtain your California learners permit.
When you are at DMV, you will take the standard DMV driver's license exam. Upon passage, you will be issued your learners permit.
The permit will not be valid until you have completed your first driver training lesson with your instructor.
|
Traffic School
Unfortunately, most drivers eventually receive a traffic ticket for violating the vehicle code. Most California courts allow drivers to take traffic school to "erase" the ticket from their DMV record. This helps to keep your auto insurance premiums lower.
You may take traffic school online in the comfort of your own home with Traffic School Online.
